Research - Genre Options

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I’ve been on here but today, I will be listing my top 3 genre choices for my brief. The brief I will be doing is a magazine. Before I get into the genres, I will put the layout of typical magazine conventions to have as a guide to the conventions needed in the different genres. As well this article talks about the 10 key elements for a magazine layout. This ties into all these genres in their own way since the genres will have different conventions. So, let's get into the genre options.

In general, magazines require these things to create a good magazine. The first thing needed is the concept of the magazine. The concept is like a sub-genre since it focuses on a smaller part that relates to the main genre. It helps focus on the audience and relate the information in the magazine.

The second thing needed is a target audience. The target audience identifies who the subject is for. This allows the magazine to plan to cater to the audience and make content that appeals to them.

The third thing needed is content. Content can consist of articles, reviews, interviews, tips, how-to's and more. This content can differ based on the genre of the magazine. This helps go into details about the concept of the magazine by having information related to it.

The last thing is visuals. Visuals focus on things in the article that are seen instead of readingVisuals are things like cover designphotography, graphs, charts, and layouts. These different visuals help enhance the magazine by leading readers to the topic, seeing what is being described, and supporting the information of the content presented. Also, the layout of the visuals and content is important as it draws attention to the different details on the page. All these conventions are important to making a good magazine in general, but the genres are what help differentiate them from one another. So, let’s get into the genre options.

Option 1 – Food:

The first genre I was thinking of doing was food. For food, the target audience would be people who are interested in food, professional chefs, or even stay-at-home parents wanting to learn some recipes.

Sometimes, based on the concept, it can change the target audience. For concept, it must relate to food. An example of a magazine concept would be vegan recipes. The concept is vegan, and the purpose of that concept is to show recipes that are vegan. As well this creates a target audience to be vegans or people interested in vegan recipes.

Lastly, the content in a food magazine contains articles. These can include reviews of restaurants, interviews with a well-known chef, recipes, and even how-to-guides

Visuals for a food magazine would be photos of food that are being discussed or reviewed. An example would be an article about a new sushi restaurant, and the writer reviews the signature dragon roll. Using a photo of the dragon roll dish can show how it looks, which could help in understanding the review. These genre conventions help in creating an appealing, informative, and high-quality food magazine.

Option 2 – Travel:

The second genre I was thinking of doing was travel. For travel, the target audience would be travelers but would vary based on the concept. For concept, it could be types of ways to travel such as solo, with a partner, or with family.

It can also be the types of events on the trip such as adventures, culture, sightseeing, or cuisine. This drives the target audience of the magazine. An example of this is a travel magazine with a concept of relaxing things to do on a solo trip. This draws an audience of solo travelers who like a relaxing trip.

For content, travel magazines will contain content like stories of trips from a travel writer, articles about cities, countries, or even events in areas that are fun to explore. This content helps go into detail about the concept. A good example of this would be an article about an amazing spa in a country that immerses you with nature. This article would go back to the concept of a relaxing solo trip.

For visuals, things like photos of landmarks, culture events, local cuisine, or even activities in the area are examples of visuals. The visuals help in showing more detail by looks. An example of a visual for the spa article would be a photo of the name of the place or a photo of the immersive nature view in the spa.

Option 3 – Sports:

The last genre I was thinking of was sports. For sports, the target audience is people into sports, athletes, coaches, and, in most cases, people interested in a specific sport being covered. Typically, sports magazine’s target audience is younger men (between the ages of 18 to late 30s).

For concept, it can focus on a specific sport or athlete. An example of this would be a sports magazine about football. The target audience for this would be people who are football fans or athletes from football, and the concept would be focusing on football.

When it comes to content, things like stories about an athlete’s journey, game recaps, interviews with coaches about their strategies for their sport, and even equipment needed to play a specific game are all types of content in a sports magazine. An example of content would be having an article about the quarterback on the football team discussing their journey across their career and how they manage to be focused and relaxed with all the pressure. The article would support the concept by getting to understand football from a player's perspective and how they can feel when playing.

Lastly, visuals, photographs of players in action in their sport, photos of athletes from photoshootsand game plays are all ways to be displayed in a magazine. An example of this is showing a game play that helped score a touchdown next to the article of the coaches' interview about game strategies. All this leads to a successful, detailed, appealing sports magazine.

All these genres share the same magazine conventions, but they differ in the content in the magazines. This is what makes these genres different from one another. Each contains information that is unique from one another. This is why these are my top genres to choose for my magazine. Anyways, stay tuned for the next post to see some examples of these genres in magazines and maybe that will help me narrow down my choice.
